RESIDENTIAL
THE MOUNTAIN RIVER HOUSE + WORKSHOP
Mountain River, Huon Valley, Tasmania.
Stage: Building Permit Approval

This home is designed for a professional couple who purchased a beautiful site in mountain river. This Site sits adjacent to a river
that runs all year round, providing fresh mountain spring water off 'sleeping beauty' as she is known to locals.

the masterbedroom / ensuite face onto the river, shielded by the living areas, guest wing & study. Featuing timber ceilings, polished concrete floors, hardwood timber cladding & sagar black sandtone cladding inside & out,
the materials speak to the sub-alpine environment & cultural heritage of the clients.
This series of buildings have been carefully designed to sit comfortable and unassumingly within the regional rural context of the area. Architect Simon Linardi is very familiar with the huon valley, southern Tasmania: having spent the first half of his life living there.

The home is a sculpural organic piece of architecture, encaptulating the rich site features within home, through the movement of ceiling plane & figuration of the plan layout: spaces that can emerge from behind others & allow panoramic views of the undulating mountain ranges, adjacent treelined banks of the river & agricultural land that sits to the north & east of the site.

THE SHEPPARD PROPELLOR HOUSE
Hawthorn East, VICTORIA
Stage: Complete

This home involved the internal remodelling & an extension to small 1930's heritage brick dwelling in hawthorn east.
The clients wished to add an additional bedroom to the existing dwelling & provide a new living/ dining & kitchen zone to the north.
The site was a narrow 7m wide duplex configuration. with the inclusion of a large diamond prism skylight & an additional lightcourt abutting the shared brick boundary wall, we were able to reinvigorate the existing structure which was quite dark & bring an organic pavillion structure into the existing garden.
This allowed us to capture the pre-existing landscape edges & mature trees within the site & beyond. The expansive ceiling & skylight create an everchanging environment within the home, with the colour of the sky & changing weather patterns impacting the atmosphere within the home. We wanted the space to feel as if it sat freely in the rectilinear site, but playing with the figuration of its footprint, we were able to create views & different human scale experiences of the structure as you move around inside & outside of it.

We maintained the original clinker brickwork & facade of the existing dwelling with minor modifcations done to bedrooms & existing sitting room, which adjoins the threshold of next living area.
Existing ceiling mouldings, picture rails & an old bathroom was modified with simple finishes as to not disturb the original features of the home.

With the nearest neighbouring dwelling more than 70 metres from the home & hidden by the undulating topography & low-lying shrubs & native coastal landscape, the experience of the site surrounding the home & within the broader dolphin sands locale, is unique to this peninsula of land (with the lagoon behind & the beach in front).

The Bridge House
West Hobart, Tasmania
Stage: Planning permit

The Bridge House is a compact 2 bedroom home designed for a site in West Hobart, Tasmania.
situated at the foothills of the Wellington Ranges, with views east to South Hobart & Sandy Bay & North-East towards the Derwent River & eastern shore, The home is to sit quietly within a cool temperate forest environment, which is so classic of Southern Tasmania.
The Design intends to recede into the steep site with access from the carparking concourse at the top level to give our semi retired client ease of access well into the future.

The home commences casually through a carport & bicycle/outdoor storage locker, before gently ramping down into the top level of the home: the intended use is primary residential accommodation at the top and with an ancillary space where the client may lead pilates classes, or have the option to lease the space to tenants or short term accommodation intermittently.
As we arrive inside the home, walking through a calm & dimly lit corridor space (which provides access to the bedroom & bathroom) we arrive in the living zone that enjoys the immense canopy vegetation of the site. Elevated approximately 8m off the natural ground level, the home appears to feel like a treehouse. Like other homes in this West Hobart precinct, it enjoys a solitude right on the doorstep of the hobart cbd.

The Indoor & Outdoor spaces are seamlessly integrated with the surrounding environment, with the volumetric spaces of the home in the ceiling & wall surfaces dissolving into the landscape.
The structural elements frame different views & focal points within the surrounding environment and create a sene of enclosure & privacy from adjacent neighbours.
The intention is to pick up on the ever changing atmosphere of light & movement of the trees & landscape during different weather patterns. Organic architecture allows for a greater connection to the environment. This home is compact though expansive in feeling. This is an important principle applied to all of our architectural projects.

The downtairs living space is a flexible room
that can function as a small pilates studio
or living area for guest accomodation. A kitchenette & laundry are integrated behind cupboards with storage to allow the space to be used for entertainment or as needed.

The Dragonfly House
Tranmere, Tasmania
Stage: Building permit
The bathrooms features a sealed bookmatched timber veneer door, with lighter oak veneer panels installed and sealed to vanity & wall. Terrazzo benchtops with a mixture of blues & greens add soft colour against the off-white finger tiles. The Dragonfly house is a new 4 bedroom home designed for a young family who planned to settle & enjoy this elevated site that features vast panoramic views of mount welling, hobart city, sandy bay & taroona on the opposite side of the derwent river.

As you enter the home a wide hallway and 1500mm wide stairs lead you into a large living space with 4.5m high ceilings & expansive glazing around the living space, which is over 100sqm in size.
The internal wall living is to be made of hu0n pine veneer which is locally milled. The kitchen is also to feature the veneer with some selected hardwood timber benchtops, finely crafted by local furniture makers.

The open plan of the space features a number of sitting areas, a small study with build in hardwood shelving
& a television nook clad is a stone tile to add some texture & contract when lit up at night
High level glazing allows for uninterrupted skyscapes, which negated the confines of the rectangular site that.
These expansive techniques allow the experience of the space to go far beyond and into the elegant landscape surrounding the Derwent river & mountains beyond: experiencing the landscape at different view points from the elevated mezzanine/landing as you enter the home or move between upstairs bedroom, bathrooms & laundry spaces.

The living area is elevated above the ground to allow for a large storage area under the home. This also gives greater aspect and solar access to the home.
Composed of hardwood timbers, glass and concealed steel framing, the elevated outdoor living space takes in the beautiful panoramic views & sunlight with some provision for covered outdoor space to the west. This allows the home to be opened up, all year round and protected from hard winds, whilst allowing for privacy screening from & for the adjacent neighbouring sites.
The projected roof planes that site at different angles, also allow for addition light to enter the home, whilst changing the atmosphere and volumetric spaces inside the home. The vertical & horizontal lines are celebrated, whilst the angles roof planes provide a sensitive response the the 8m fall towards the lower side of the site.

give the impression that the upper level & pool building are sunken into the ground. The rough texture & soft tonal colours reflect the sedimentary value of the earth below.

The truncated facade rises up to pick up the deep roof eaves below, allowing the structure to be tied back into the vertical framing.
This creates additional depth to the facade & allows for covered outdoor spaces & plenty of shade and protection from the sun in warmer months.
The stone landscaping bleeds into the existing soft landscape and will grow over with details of groundcover & plantings over time. The home is designed to grow with the landscape, rather than to sit opposed to it.

MULTI-RESIDENTIAL
125 Bathurst Street, Hobart
Tasmania
Stage: Town-planning Approved
Hobart Apartments + Mixed use/retail

125 Bathurst Street is a town-planning approved multi-residential / mixed use apartment project. Atelier Cartel Director Simon Linardi understood the community concerns regarding housing shortages for the inner city of Hobart, as well as the urban design & heritage requirements that would place significant stress on different stakeholders: consulting extensively with the heritage councillors and the urban design advisory board, the hobart city council voted to approve the development, at a time when the vast majority of applications were being knocked back.
With careful planning, transparency & appropriate design solutions, property developers can find a solution that can work for various parties.
Importantly the project reflects upon the rich architectural history of the surrounding streetscape & precinct with many art deco & period buildings adorning the inner city. The existing art deco building was to be retained with continuing use of commercial history.

The lower massing of the apartment building was set back 8m from the street facade to ensure the view lines from the street respected the existing art deco building. Beyond it lies large garden terraces for guests and a number of rooftop shared public spaces for entertaining friends or catching up with other residents.
There are currently a shortage of roof terrace spaces in the cbd and surrounds of hobart, these sort of spaces can bring a new dimension to urban life & add potential for safe social spaces in the city.
Hobart has alot of potential for small - mid rise boutique
residential development with some great examples by local tasmanian practises starting to emerge in recent years.
Atelier cartel are proud representatives of the local community & we enjoy working on these sort of projects.
as a local Tasmanian raised architect, Simon Linardi respects the views of tasmanians to carefully progress the built environment.

75 Fouche Avenue, Old Beach tasmania is a new 15 x townhouse development situated at old beach, alongside the derwent river estuary. The site enjoys spectacular views of Mount Wellington/wellington national park & the northern suburbs of hobart with the breadth and scale of the derwent river.
situated in a quiet residential pocket, these generous 3 & 4 bedroom homes are arranged into 4 types of semi-detached houses. with the front 4 dwellings enjoying huge gardens fronting onto the public walking trail beside the estuary & waterfront precinct.
These homes present comfortable & expansive open plan living with compact rear gardens/ service courts.

Atelier Cartel director Simon was responsible for the design development and complete construction documentation of the dwellings, whilst assisting with consultant coordination for the developer/client.
The dwellings present quality new mid-level homes for a much needed housing shortage that the region is currently experiencing.
Furthermore this project demonstrates the appropriate scale of in-fill multi-residential townhouse development for existing outer suburbs and regions of hobart, where homes and residential sub-division development have grown organically over time: albeit often with examples of excessive lot sizes and residential home designs.

The open living & large feature windows enjoy outlook onto the derwent river, with covered outdoor terraces.
The dwellings situated adjacent to the river feature raked ceiling, additional glazing & skylights, with tas oak timber floors, a mixture of joinery options provided to
new residents.

EUROA MASTERPLAN / PEDESTRIAN LINK (ARTC RAIL)
IN COLLABORATION WITH EUROA CONNECT COMMUNITY GROUP & NEAD ARCHITECTS
Stage: Masterplan / Urban Design Concept

Commissioned by the community led group 'Euroa Connect' director Simon Linardi was invited to propose a new pedestrian link between the Northern & Southern sides of the trainlink in the regional victorian town of Euroa.
The proposal seeks to provide a safe & well accessible space with a public meeting space & arrival point for people entering the town via train, or arriving towards Binney street (the main street).
The ARTC are the responsible government organisation for developing engineered solutions across the rail network (providing freight along the east coast of Australia). Traditionally provisions such as the overpass in Euroa did not factor the impact of cutting off the 2 sides of the town on commerce/ accessibility & public amenities/space. This is a renewed attempt to provide a suitable response to the connectivity for the town.

The underpass allows for a sunken plaza/ amphitheatre which could provide a fantastic space for music events, public meetings, fund raising events or other cultural uses. The landscape features a series of terraced gardens & seating spaces with a view to encourage outdoor activity & socialising in the town. Currently there are now civic plaza spaces & being at the end of Binney street, this site provides

The inclined landscape provides access to each terrace/seating space to ensure all people can enjoy the different aspects of the site. The bridge features antique materials such as corten steel & brass coloured embossed metal panels that celebrate the craft of original hotels , pubs & industrious past/present history of the town.

Subtle patterned metal panels on the bridge would allow for interesting details such as embedded lighting within the panels would provide additional visual delight & ambiance at night time.
EUROA MASTERPLAN / PEDESTRIAN LINK (ARTC RAIL)
IN COLLABORATION WITH EUROA CONNECT COMMUNITY GROUP & NEAD ARCHITECTS - RAIL PRECINCT PLAN
Stage: Masterplan / Urban Design Concept

This Collaboration between Atelier Cartel Architecture & NEAD (North Eastern architecture & Design) explores a masterplan for the sites to the northern & southern side of the existing rail.
NEAD in conjunction with the Euroa Connect team explored the critical move to replace the vehicular overpass with an underpass for cars, which gives back alot of additional on grade site area & allows for greater urban design/ connectivity potential.
Atelier Cartel was involved in community consultation to allow for different civic functions (a wishlist) by local community members for how the future site could be used. These include:
>Public gardens & revilatised native species plantings across the sites
> Play area for children
>Community vegetable gardens
>An Art Gallery/Museum
>Cafe/Restaurant in the historic Goods Shed

An Aerial view shows the vehicular underpass proposal with landscaping & a red pedestrian footbridge that connects a music/performance space with a possible photography museum/art gallery, covered farmers market-hall canopy & access to the underpass/ new train station/platform on the opposite side of the rail line.
